Ready for the cloud forests, coca, and more mountains? Today we start out with an extremely scenic 3-hour journey from La Paz to the Yungas Cloud Forest region to the east of the city and on the slopes of the Andes. We arrive first in the town of Coroico (1740m) the provincial capital and market center of the North Yungas region. We will be met in Coroico by a representative of the farming village of Tocaña, who will accompany us on the 45-minute journey to the community. Once there, we go for a short hike to visit local coca plantations to learn the process of planting, tending, harvesting, and drying coca leaves for local uses and export to La Paz. After some time on the farms, we return to the Tocaña Cultural Center to learn about the history, culture, and lifeways of the Afro-Bolivian people. We will even enjoy a traditional lunch in the community before returning to Coroico and then to La Paz.
