Our Andean Weavings half day program starts with a dizzying trip from La Paz to El Alto on the city’s spectacular cable car system. Once in El Alto, we head west to the town of Viacha, in the vast Bolivian altiplano, and visit COMCA, a community-based women’s wool-dying and weaving project. We will learn about traditional techniques used to spin and dye wool and try our hand at dying alpaca and sheep’s wool using coca leaves, onion skin, purple corn and other traditional materials. For those seeking a hands-on experience, you can help out and even practice weaving methods. After the workshop, we return to La Paz and visit the Witches Market and fair-trade handicraft stores where beautiful Andean textiles are on display.
